Dr. Rob Matthews talks about the opportunity

How can technology help us lower health care costs, while enabling great patient outcomes? By harnessing innovation in the wireless space — along with pervasive technologies such as ubiquitous sensing, cloud computing, advanced analytics, and social networks — we can fundamentally shift the paradigm in health care delivery.

With the Institute's Infrastructure IndependenceSM health care research program, we have the opportunity to create a new model of health care delivery, which translates into the right care, at the right time, wherever people need it. Health care innovations, like wireless health solutions, are enabling such a model to become a reality. They can help us create an integrated model of continuous care, where diagnostics, monitoring and treatment are simply part of our daily lives. This model will give us the power to manage a chronic health condition before it becomes a crisis and before it requires hospitalization.

The Institute believes this new model will alleviate some of the tremendous stresses on our current health care system, where the burgeoning cost of acute and episodic care in hospitals and other health care facilities is unsustainable. The Infrastructure IndependenceSM health care model will foster in a new era of patient-centered care and will lead to significantly lower health care costs.
