More than 100 million Americans are currently living with at least one chronic health condition. The Institute will be developing and advancing wireless health applications to help redress and mitigate the impact of chronic disease and offset the financial, personal and public burden of this crisis.
Expenditures on chronic diseases account for more than 75 percent of the $2.3 trillion cost of our healthcare system. A recent PricewaterhouseCoopers analysis determined that productivity losses in workers with chronic disease, such as disability, unplanned absences and inefficiencies, are four times the cost of early treatment.
Chronic disease prevalence increases substantially with age, particularly for those over 65 years old. Co-morbidities are exceedingly common in the elderly, who also face increased risk of depression and sleep disorders.
Unlike acute illnesses that may be amenable to short-term intervention, chronic diseases require long-term monitoring and management, lifestyle changes and adherence to medication regimens that may be inconvenient or produce side effects.
Wireless health solutions offer dynamic, cost-effective ways to educate and engage people living with chronic conditions, while placing tools in their hands to help them "self-manage" treatment and enjoy a much higher quality of life. The Institute will be conducting research and advancing wireless health solutions for a broad range of conditions, including the following.
